Scandinavia freeride minitour '05

Myself and Toni had had this idea about checking out the best northern scandinavia offpiste joints ever since our Mt. Elbrus trip. Other people got interested too and suddenly there were 9 of us to go! The trip was a blazing success as the weather favored us in all four places; we visited Hemavan, Tärnaby, Riksgränsen (Sweden) and Narvik (Norway).

Other stuff:

Here's a video of the trip put together by Toni.

As if that wasn't bad enough - here's the actual bloopers video.

Moooo! Stopped on the way to greet this fella. And to have lunch.

First big hike. Quite exhausting since the snow was partly deepish. Covered a distance of about 1km or so.

Hemavan
Mind-blowing after ski party a la Hemavan.
First day in Narvik. Going shopping before skiing (the lifts would open no earlier than 1300).
Cloudy weather but a 20cm snowdump over night guaranteed fun moments on the slopes of Narvik. The top of the Fagernes mountain is at 1200meters, while the village is by the fjord. Awesome heights and great sights.
Crazy Stiga sled kids of Narvik. They'd do a black slope without braking. Jukka + co saw one shatter his leg. Local action sport..

Dinnertime
Sleepy-sleepy time for the guys from the other cabin. Next time think again before ordering a second beer!
Riikka's gotten a small passenger..
Driving the Kung Olavs Veg, the 27km road between Narvik and Riksgränsen. All the cars were assembled into a convoy and then they'd follow a snowplough through (there were occasionally spots with over 1 meter of snow on the road). Notice the customary left-handed traffic of Norway.
Pistes of Riksgränsen. Notice they had marked offpist routes :-) Now thats really something.
Almost indefinite offpiste in Riksgränsen.
Heikki & Jukka "dropping in"
Riikka descending towards hot chocolate in "Lappis"
In the absence of people willing to do any after ski (?!) I took refuge on the couch with a beer and some symbian coding.

Sundown over Narvik
Riksgränsen's 2nd day started early.
Mikko L. moving in for the kill. We were determined to find decent offpiste.
Samu taking some quick scenery shots before starting the hike on the peak next to us, the Nordalsfjället.

Mikko V. reaches the top! The climb was along a very steep wall with concerningly lot of snow looking like an BIG avalanche waiting to happen. Was pleasantly surprised to find myself among the first ones up there.
Gasping for breath for 5minutes before started the descent. Nice views. Met another group up there (on the right).
Jukka taking final look back before taking on the white smorgasbord of best freeride skiing Riksgränsen has to offer.
The first half of the run were on crusted snow.. more enjoying the view than the ride. But the rest of the run turned out to be 50cm deep powder! Wohoo! No time to take pictures there.
